Whirly Waltzes and Rapid Rotations
A workshop on waltz technique - a lot of dances have a waltz-on at the end, some dances are entirely in waltz time and waltz figures are quite common in quadrilles. This workshop will focus on the two most common varieties of circular waltz, the Rotary Chasse and the Viennese Waltz, with an emphasis on technique and fixing common problems. There will be plenty of dancing built into the workshop to put these steps into practice.

England Old and New
The lovely old English longways dances from around 300 years ago were the forebears of American contra. With the form “longways for as many as will”, couples in long sets, everyone can dance.
There will also be some contras. "New" means New England (USA), which means contras.

Irish Set Dancing
From the ridiculous(ly easy Ballycommon Set) to the sublime(ly choreographed Dublin Set). We will warm up with the simple but fun Ballycommon Set from North Tipperary, which includes the popular "Elephants Tail" figure. We will then move on to the beautifully choreographed Dublin Set written by Sean and Stacia Clerkin in 1988 to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the founding of the City of Dublin. It is full of imagery relating to the city and its millenium celebrations. If time permits we will relax with a less challenging but lively Kerry set such as the Kenmare Polka. |

New England
Contra dances from New England and other parts of the USA.
Contra lived on in New England even when, as “English dance”, it was spurned after the American Revolution, in favour of French quadrilles (which became square dance). Its popular revival began last century, and has resulted in a fanatical following. Contra fun is flirty and infectious! |
